The Atlanta Braves is a professional team based in Atlanta , Georgia . The team came into existence in the name of Boston Red Stockings in the year 1876, it was in the year 1966 that the team came to be known as the Atlanta Braves. The Atlanta Stadium was opened in the Atlanta in the year 1965 season and it was in the year 1966 that the Braves moved to Atlanta . On April 12th 1966 , the Braves hosted the Pittsburgh Pirates for the first Major League Game in Atlanta . The game lasted for 13 innings before the Pirates won 3-2. The Braves ended their first season in 5th place with 85-77 record, in their first season in Dixieland, as Hank Aaron led the NL in HR and RBI. The very next season proved to be the first losing season in 15 years with a woeful record of 77-85. They won the 1969 NL West pennant, before being defeated by the Miracle Mets in the NLCS.
